Mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) is the native deer species of the American west, and they are often called Black-tailed deer along the Pacific coast. There are eleven described subspecies, and in Point Reyes National Seashore (where many of these images were taken) we have the Columbian Black-tailed subspecies (Odocoileus hemionus columbianus).
