Western sandpiper in breeding colors
A western sandpiper (Calidris mauri) in transitional summer plumage feeds on the flats of Pillar Point Harbor on Half Moon Bay, California. Late April is a great time to photograph shorebirds in California, since many of them are changing into their bright summer colors before flying north to the tundra to breed.
